Why Is My Dog Barking or Crying at Night? 9 Causes and How to Stop It

Why does your dog bark, howl or cry at night? 9 causes, an evening routine that works, puppy and senior dog tips, and what to do about a neighbour's dog.

Indian Indie dog standing at an apartment window at night, barking at the street below

Quick answer

Dogs bark at night because of street dogs and night sounds, a full bladder, boredom, sleeping alone, fear or, in older dogs, pain and confusion. To stop dog barking at night, give a long evening walk and a brain game, take a last toilet trip before bed, let your dog sleep near you, block outside noise and keep the same bedtime routine every night.

It’s 2 am, the house is quiet, and your dog starts barking. Again. You check the window and there’s nothing there. If your dog barking at night is costing you sleep, and maybe a few awkward conversations with the neighbours, you are not alone. In Delhi NCR it is one of the most common problems pet parents bring to our trainers, especially in winter and around Diwali.

The good news is that night barking almost always has a reason, and once you find it, it is very fixable. This guide covers the 9 most common causes, a simple night routine that works, what to do with puppies and older dogs, and the mistakes that make barking worse. If your dog barks a lot during the day as well, read our main guide on how to stop dog barking too.

Is It Normal for Dogs to Bark at Night?

A few barks at a real noise, like the gate opening or a street dog fight, are normal. Dogs hear far better than we do, and many dogs see guarding the home as their job. What is not normal is barking that goes on for minutes at a time, happens every night, or starts suddenly in a dog who used to sleep well. That kind of barking is your dog telling you something is wrong: it needs something, it is scared, or it is not getting enough to do during the day.

9 Common Reasons Your Dog Barks at Night

1. Street dogs and night sounds

Night is when street dogs are most active, and their barking, fights and howls carry a long way. Your dog hears them and joins in. Bikes, late deliveries, construction and even the lift in your building can set it off. This is the most common reason for dog barking at night in India.

2. The guard’s whistle and patrols

Many societies and colonies have guards who whistle or tap their sticks on rounds through the night. To your dog, that is a stranger passing the house every hour. Alert barking at these sounds is very common, especially in ground-floor flats and independent houses.

3. Needing to pee

Puppies under six months can’t hold their bladder all night, and older dogs often need to go more often too. A dog that barks or whines, goes to the door and then settles once it has been out is usually just asking for a toilet break.

4. Not enough exercise or mental work

A dog that has slept most of the day while everyone was at work or school has energy to burn at night. Bored dogs bark at sounds they would normally ignore. High-energy breeds like Huskies, Beagles, Labradors and German Shepherds are the most likely to have this problem.

5. Sleeping alone

Dogs are social animals. A dog that sleeps in a separate room, on the balcony or in the car porch may bark and whine because it feels cut off from the family. This is often mild separation stress rather than true separation anxiety.

6. A puppy in a new home

Puppy barking at night and puppy crying at night are normal in the first one or two weeks after you bring a puppy home. It has just left its mother and littermates and is sleeping alone for the first time. With the right setup, most puppies settle quickly.

7. Age and confusion in senior dogs

Older dogs sometimes start barking at night for no clear reason. This can be a sign of canine cognitive dysfunction, a condition similar to dementia, which often gets worse in the evening (sometimes called sundowning). Poor eyesight and hearing can also make a senior dog anxious in the dark.

8. Pain, itching or illness

A dog that is uncomfortable can’t settle. Joint pain, an ear infection, an itchy skin problem, an upset stomach or thirst can all cause restless barking at night. Sudden night barking in a dog who used to sleep well is always worth a vet check.

9. Fear: fireworks, thunder and loud sounds

Firecrackers around Diwali and weddings, thunderstorms in the monsoon and loud music from a party nearby can frighten a dog into barking, panting and pacing. Fear barking is often high-pitched and comes with trembling or hiding. See our guide to dog anxiety during fireworks for help with this one.

How to Stop Your Dog Barking at Night: 8 Steps

1. Give a proper evening walk

Aim for a 30 to 45 minute walk in the evening with plenty of sniffing time. Sniffing tires a dog’s brain as much as running tires its body. If the air quality is poor, keep the walk shorter and add indoor play instead; our guide to dog walking in Delhi pollution explains how.

2. Add a brain game before bed

Ten minutes of a sniffing game, a stuffed chew or a short training session after dinner helps your dog wind down. Try one of these indoor games for dogs.

3. Take a last toilet trip

Make the last trip outside the very last thing before lights out. For adult dogs, pick up the water bowl about an hour before bed (unless your vet advises otherwise, or the weather is very hot).

4. Choose the right sleeping spot

Most dogs sleep best close to their people. A bed in your bedroom, or just outside the door, often stops night barking on its own. Keep the bed away from windows, main doors and balconies, where outside sounds are loudest.

5. Block out sound and light

Heavy curtains, a closed window and a fan, air purifier or soft white noise can mask the street dogs and guard whistles that set your dog off. Some dogs settle well with calm music played at low volume.

6. Check needs calmly, then don’t reward the barking

If your dog barks, check calmly whether it needs the toilet or is unwell. If all is fine, don’t scold, chat or play. Wait for a few seconds of quiet, then praise softly. Over a few nights, your dog learns that barking at night doesn’t bring a party.

7. Teach a “quiet” cue during the day

It is much easier to teach “quiet” in daylight when you are both calm. Our guide on how to stop dog barking shows the steps. Once your dog knows it, you can use it at night.

8. Keep the same routine every night

Dogs love predictability. Walk, dinner, game, toilet trip and bed at roughly the same time each night tells your dog’s body when it is time to sleep. Here is how to build a daily routine for your dog.

A Sample Evening Routine That Stops Night Barking

Most dogs settle faster when every evening looks the same. Adjust the times to your family, but keep the order:

TimeWhat to doWhy it helps
6:30–7:30 pmLong walk with plenty of sniffingUses up physical energy before the streets get busy
8:00 pmDinner, ideally from a puzzle feeder or snuffle matMental work tires dogs as much as a walk
9:00 pm10 minutes of training or a find-it gameA calm, tired brain is less reactive to sounds
10:00 pmWater away, quiet time, lights dimSignals that the day is ending
10:30 pmLast toilet trip, then straight to bedFewer “I need to pee” barks at 2 am
NightBed near you, curtains closed, fan or white noise onBlocks the street dogs, guards and traffic

Puppy Barking or Crying at Night

For a new puppy, comfort matters more than discipline. Put the puppy’s bed or crate next to your bed for the first few weeks so it can hear and smell you. A soft toy or a T-shirt that smells of you helps. Plan one toilet trip in the middle of the night for puppies under four months, and keep it quick, quiet and boring: out, pee, praise, back to bed. Crate training done gently also helps puppies feel safe at night. Most puppies settle within one to two weeks.

Older Dogs Barking at Night

If a senior dog starts barking at night, see your vet first to rule out pain, poor eyesight or hearing, and cognitive changes. At home, a dim night light, a non-slip bed in a quiet corner, gentle evening walks and short brain games can all help. Keep furniture in the same place so your dog can find its way in the dark. Our guide to senior dog care has more ideas.

Dog Barking at Night: What Not to Do

  • Don’t shout. To your dog, it sounds like you are barking too.
  • Don’t use shock or spray bark collars. They punish the noise without fixing the cause, and they can make fear and anxiety worse.
  • Don’t lock your dog on the balcony or in the car porch. More noise and isolation means more barking.
  • Don’t open the door for every bark. If your dog has just been out, opening the door again teaches it that barking works.
  • Don’t ignore sudden changes. New night barking in an older dog needs a vet visit, not just training.

Dog Barking at Night in Delhi NCR Societies

In apartments and gated societies, night barking is the most common cause of complaints to the RWA. A friendly word with your neighbours, telling them you are working on it, usually goes a long way. Keep windows closed at night, move your dog’s bed away from shared walls, and plan your evening walk before most people go to bed.

For more on what makes barking worse, read the ASPCA’s advice on barking, which also warns against punishment and anti-bark collars.

Dog Howling or Crying at Night: What Does It Mean?

Howling is different from barking. It is a long, rising sound that dogs use to call out to others far away. At night it is usually a reply to sirens, a pressure horn, a temple or mosque loudspeaker, or other dogs howling in the distance. Huskies, Beagles and many Indie dogs howl more than other breeds.

A dog that whines or “cries” at night is usually asking for something: a toilet trip, company, warmth in winter, or relief from pain. Puppies cry because they miss their littermates, and older dogs may cry because they are confused or sore.

Is a dog crying at night a bad omen?

In many Indian homes, a dog crying or howling at night is believed to be a bad sign. There is no evidence for this. Dogs howl and cry for the practical reasons above, and they react to sounds we often cannot hear, which is why it can seem to come “out of nowhere”. If your own dog cries at night, treat it as a message about its needs, not a warning, and check for the toilet, pain, cold or loneliness first. Please never hit, chase away or harm a dog for howling. Street dogs and pets are protected under India’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

What to Do About a Neighbour’s Dog Barking at Night

If the barking keeps you awake but the dog is not yours:

  1. Talk to the owner kindly, in the daytime. Many owners don’t know, because the dog only barks once they are asleep or out.
  2. Be specific. “He barks from about 1 to 3 am most nights” is more useful than “your dog is always barking”.
  3. Share what works. A longer evening walk, the dog sleeping indoors near the family and blocking the street view fix most cases. You could share this guide.
  4. Use your RWA if needed. Most societies have a pet committee or rules on noise, and a calm mediated chat usually works better than a complaint letter.
  5. For street dogs, ask your RWA or local animal welfare group about feeding points away from homes and sterilisation drives, which reduce night fights over territory.

In the meantime, earplugs or a white noise app help you sleep while the owner works on it.

When to See a Vet or a Trainer

  • See a vet if the barking started suddenly, your dog is older, or you notice limping, scratching, more drinking, toilet accidents or changes in appetite.
  • See a trainer if the barking has gone on for more than two or three weeks despite a good routine, if your dog barks at every sound, or if neighbours have complained.

Most dogs show a clear improvement within two to four weeks of a steady night routine. You can book a free first visit with a trainer to get a plan for your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my dog bark at night for no reason?

There is usually a reason you can’t hear or see, such as a street dog far away, a guard’s whistle or a sound from the next flat. In older dogs, barking at nothing can also be a sign of pain or age-related confusion, so a vet check is a good idea.

How do I stop my dog barking at night?

Give a long evening walk and a short brain game, take a last toilet trip before bed, let your dog sleep near you, block outside noise with curtains and a fan, and keep the same bedtime routine every night. Don’t reward barking with attention once you know your dog is fine.

Is it normal for a puppy to bark or cry at night?

Yes, especially in the first one or two weeks in a new home. Keep the puppy’s bed next to yours, plan one quick toilet trip in the night for young puppies, and keep night-time calm and boring. Most puppies settle within two weeks.

Why does my dog bark at night at street dogs?

Street dogs are most active at night, and your dog is reacting to their barking or to them passing your home. Closing curtains, moving your dog’s bed away from windows and adding background sound usually reduce it a lot.

Why has my old dog started barking at night?

Common reasons are pain, needing to pee more often, poor eyesight or hearing, and canine cognitive dysfunction, which can make dogs confused and restless in the evening. Start with a vet check, then add a night light and a steady routine.

Should I ignore my dog barking at night?

First check calmly that your dog doesn’t need the toilet and isn’t unwell. If everything is fine, don’t give attention for the barking. Wait for a moment of quiet, then praise softly.

Do anti-bark collars work for night barking?

We don’t recommend them. They may stop the noise for a while but don’t fix the reason behind it, and they can make a scared or anxious dog worse.

Why does my dog howl at night?

Most night howling is a reply to distant sounds such as sirens, horns, loudspeakers or other dogs. Some dogs also howl when they are alone or bored. Closing windows, adding white noise and letting your dog sleep near you usually reduce it.

Is it a bad sign when a dog cries at night?

No. It is a common belief in India, but there is no evidence for it. Dogs cry at night because they need the toilet, feel lonely or cold, are in pain, or hear something we can’t. Check your dog’s needs and see a vet if the crying is new.

What can I do about my neighbour’s dog barking at night?

Speak to the owner politely during the day, tell them when the barking happens, and share simple fixes like a longer evening walk and letting the dog sleep indoors. If that doesn’t help, ask your RWA to mediate.

How long does it take to stop a dog barking at night?

Most dogs improve within one to two weeks of a steady evening routine, and many stop almost completely within a month. Puppies usually settle within two weeks of coming home.
